anyone recommend an itinerary or some places

1 week August 4-11. Suggestions please
I want to go to Malaysia in early August (4th-11th) with one or two friends. I will be flying in from Seoul. I'd like to go to Perhentian Kecil but also want to go to a place that has a decent night life. Can anyone recommend an itinerary or some places? Its only one week so I don't want to spend too much time travelling. Thanks.

Perhentian is on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia, and you probably won't find nightlife like what you get in the West in that part of Malaysia. Of course, you get lots of night life places in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, but those are on west coast. The nearest city to the Perhentians in Kuala Terengganu, and the largest city on the east coast is Kuantan. Kuala Terengganu is very staunchly Muslim, so you probably won't get much alcohol there. Kuantan has a Club Med nearby, so you probably can find a bit more nightlife in Kuantan.

If you have a bit more time, fly to Kota Kinabalu. There are nice beaches there, and as there are not that many Muslims, there is a bit more night life than at Kuala Terengganu. I'd recommend going to the beach at Tanjung Aru if you go there, as there are some bars you can drink at that beach. Of course, the night life still can't compare to Kuala Lumpur or Penang, but it's probably acceptable if you're not planning to get really wasted. And you can dive at Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, which is just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu.

Rainforest World Music - Kuching
I am going to be in Kuching with my father and sister for the Rainforest World Music Festival in July. There isnt a lot of information about the festival out there, so I wondered if anyone here had been to the festival, or known of the festival and had any tips - mainly regarding accommodation.

Is the festival really deep in the jungle? Is there on-site sleeping arrangements of any kind? How far is it to the nearest accommodation? Are you permitted to pitch a tent?
We wont be to fussy. Also, how far is it from the festival to the ocean?
Any info would be swell. Legends!

If you want to stay in Kuching(or in the nearer accomodation on the Santubong Peninsula),you should book the accomodation in advance.If not,you can camp at the Permai rainforest resort which isn't too far away.

It certainly isn't 'deep in the jungle'...and it is near to the sea.Its in the Sarawak Cultural Village..you can find plenty of info.about the place online.Its really great if you like different types of music..there are workshops in the daytime,evening concerts,food etc.And there are shuttle buses to and from Kuching...

Definitely not in the jungle, it's right by a road, at the Cultural Village. I prefer to stay in Kuching and take the shuttle bus to and from the festival. Most accommodation will be booked in advance, and the rooms at the festival site get booked one year ahead.
You can walk to the sea.

Any tips would be appreciated. Is saying something in Malay important?

Help me understand Malaysian culture
Nothing I read before coming to Malaysia has really prepared me for what I am finding here. I met a traveler who told me that Malaysia had very unfriendly people. I thought he was exaggerating, but my experience is the same. If I walk up to a restaurant I want to eat at, they just stare at me blankly, as if to say "what the f- do you want?" If they want my business would they not welcome me like in most other countries?

Am I just misreading the culture, doing the wrong thing, or what? Any tips would be appreciated. Is saying something in Malay important?

There are some racial issues here for sure...

A lot of times I have found people can be embarrassed because English is spoken a lot here, and if theirs is not good they might be really embarrassed to speak to you. I get that from quite a few of the hawkers I go to, even though they are by my house and I go in all the time. Some people are too shy ;) Even when I speak in (terrible) Malay - I often don't get a chance to finish my sentence before they abruptly walk away and send someone over that speaks better English.

However, there are def. racial tensions here and customer service can be a little trying in some places. Only the other day myself and a friend got shooed out of a restaurant because it was really busy (although there were 2 tables left), just a blunt we're full and a hand gesture. I think that's just a cultural difference.

Overall, take it in your stride, it could be cultural, it could be rude or it could just be someone is too shy to speak to you because they are not confident in English or just embarrassed around westoners! Just smile and carry on :))
Of course being able to say a few things in the local language is nice and often brings a smile :)

วันแรก ผมจะไปถึงสนามบิน สิบโมงกว่า ๆ ด้วย Air asia ครับ ผมเข้าใจว่าจะไปลงที LCCT ซึ่งต้องนั่งรถ bus ไปลง KL Sentral ก่อนใช่ไหมครับ มีทางอื่นไหม

วันแรก จะมีเวลาเกือบ ๆ ทั้งวัน รบกวนขอคำแนะนำได้ไหมครับ ว่าควรไปไหนดี และไปยังไงครับ ผมเข้าใจว่า หน้าโรงแรม มี Monorail IMBI ครับ พอจะไปไหนได้บ้างครับ
วันอื่น ๆ ถึงวันศุกร์ ก็จะมีเวลาตั้งแต่ 5 โมง ถึงดึก ๆ ครับ มีอะไรแนะนำไหมครับ ว่าควรจะไปไหนดี

กลางวันไปขึ้นตึกแฝด ปิโตรนาสทวินทาวเวอร์  และเดินเที่ยวมิวเซียมเนอการา(พิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งชาติ)/สวนนก/สวนผีเสื้อและเลคพาร์ค  สามสี่ที่หลังนี่อยู่บริเวณใกล้ๆกัน  เรียกแทกซีให้ไปส่งได้ค่ะ

กลางคืน  ก็ท่องราตรีแถวไทม์สแควร์ บูกิตบินตัง/ ไปดูตึกแฝดยามค่ำ/  ไปไชนาทาวน์หาของกิน  ใกล้ไชนาทาวน์มีวัดแขกมหามาเรียมมัน  แวะไปดูบรรยากาศค่ะ
กลางคืนไปเดินเล่นเมอเดกาสแควร์ด้วยก็ได้ค่่ะ  แต่ออกจะเงียบๆหน่อย

ถ้ามีเวลาทั้งวัน แล้วอยากทั่วสถานที่สำคัญๆ ก็ลองใช้บริการรถบัส hop on hop off ดูนะค่ะ ราคา 38 MYR/วัน ขึ้นและลงได้ตลอด 24 ชมค่ะ เคยขึ้นมาก็รู้สึกว่าประทับใจ ได้เที่ยวทั่ว KL ภายในวันเดียว

บินหางแดง เคยซื้อแต่ ซิม Tune น่ะค่ะ 50 บาท จองพร้อมตั๋วเครื่องบินเลย ราคาถูกมากๆๆ
